What’s Special

Strong college advisory; every student gets a laptop computer to use

The Downside

Strict discpline may not appeal to all

At Achievement First East Brooklyn High School (AF East Brooklyn), the school day runs two hours longer than at traditional public schools and students attend school for two weeks longer than the Department of Education school year. This can be helpful to working parents and children that could use extra classroom time.

The school opened in 2015 and will graduated its first class in June 2019.

Like at many other charter schools, discipline at AF East Brooklyn is strict. Some parents appreciate the sense of order and back-to-basics curriculum, but others complain that the network’s “no excuses” discipline is too harsh. Students are disciplined for violating rules, incuding minor infractions such as failing to follow directions or maintain desk area as required, chewing gum or not wearing the school uniform. On the NYC School Survey, most teachers report that discipline and order are maintained throughout the school. Achievement First schools typically have much higher suspension rates than the citywide average.

All students are given a laptop to use during the school day and at home.

Extracurricular activities include basketball, soccer, debate, Pathfinders Young Men Mentorship and Women of Color Collective.

Students get lots of support during the college admissions process, including trips to colleges and SAT prep. High school counselors will also continue to work closely with graduates once they are in college.

ADMISSIONS: By lottery. Achievement First Brownsville Middle School students get preference. (Isabel Corpus, web reports, July 2018)
