The Downside
Poor attendance
W. H. Maxwell Career and Technical High School aims to give students the skills they need to get jobs after high school in fields such as fashion, hairdressing, or vision technology, that is, making prescription eyeglasses. The small school serves a large special needs population and has twice as many girls as boys.
Students are exposed to the industries they study through visits and trade shows and receive professional certificates that may help them get jobs when they graduate.
Students may receive pay or school credit for completing internships in their fields.
Graduation rates have been on the rise in recent years. However, many students enter the school with weak academic skills, and not many students are prepared for college when they graduate. Attendance is poor.
Although the school has dealt with safety concerns in the past, the majority of students report feeling safe in the building. Teachers also generally feel order is maintained in the building, according to results of the NYC School Survey. (Melanie Quiroz, web reports and DOE data, November 2018)
