The Downside

Friction between the principal and teachers

High School of Applied Communications offers training in graphic design, computer coding and web design to give students a leg up on the job market.

Most children graduate on time and are prepared to do college-level work without taking remedial classes. However there is friction between the teachers and principal Michael Weinstein who took the helm in 2016.

Teachers seem unhappy. Only about half would recommend the school to other families on school surveys, and fewer than half say the principal is an effective manager who makes the school run smoothly.

HSAC is on the 5th floor of a beautifully renovated office building that is also home to Bard Early College and Academy of Finance and Enterprise, with whom it shares a small gym. The school offers visual arts in a modern studio.

All students are welcome to attend an after school program to catch up with classwork, review lessons one-on-one or in small groups and use the school’s computers.

The majority of the graduates attend SUNY or CUNY schools such as Borough of Manhattan Community College, LaGuardia and Stonybrook. Private school acceptances have included St. John’s University and Savannah College of Art and Design.
