What’s Special
International Baccalaureate program, Arabic language instruction.
The Downside
Low enrollment; academics have a way to go
Founded with the mission of fostering cultural understanding, Khalil Gibran International Academy offers instruction in Arabic and English. A tiny school near Atlantic Avenue’s Arab-American neighborhood, Khalil Gibran serves many Arabic-speaking immigrants, including some from war-torn Yemen.
In 2015, the school was certified as an International Baccalaureate (IB) program, offering a diploma that is recognized in 100 counties. Not all students graduate with the demanding IB diploma, however. Most enter high school with weak academic skills; attendance is poor, and many of those who do graduate are not prepared for college.
The school has had steady leadership since Winston Hamman became principal in 2011. Founded as a middle school in 2007, the school had a rocky beginning, with five principals in five years, staff turnover, several moves, plus political attacks in the tabloids because of its Arab language theme. Its middle school closed in 2013 because of poor enrollment. The high school, too, has long suffered from low enrollment. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, December 2018)
