The Downside
No gymnasium
University Neighborhood High School offers free college credit alongside regular high school classes. Additionally, it provides a career and technical education track in engineering or computer science. The school maintains a safe, inclusive culture through ongoing training for staff and students.
Academics & Instruction: The school offers two separate programs. The CTE (career and technical education) program in computer science or engineering takes a range of students of varying academic abilities. The early college program is screened based on grades.
The CTE program exposes students to the world of work through college and career exploration, internships and classes. After sampling computer science and engineering in the 9th grade, students choose one track for their remaining years.
The early college program is in partnership with Baruch College, LaGuardia Community College, and Queensborough College. Students take courses taught by university professors on the high school campus. Students in this program may earn enough college credits to save up to one year of college tuition.
The school also has Advanced Placement (AP) courses such as Spanish, Chinese, calculus, biology and many more. It also offers a nice range of visual arts and dance courses.
Culture & Environment: University Neighborhood strives to offer a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment. Weekly lessons cover topics like race, identity, social justice, and cultural understanding. Teachers create relevant lessons that respect students' lives and cultures, while adult mentors provide support for any issues that arise. The school's dedication earned it a “Respect for All” title by the City six years in a row.
Special Education & English as a New Language (ENL): There are stand alone and push in ENL courses depending on what students need.
Building & Facilities: Established in 1999 within the former PS 31 building, University Neighborhood is housed in a five-story Beaux Arts structure with high ceilings and large windows, that fill rooms with natural light. While lacking a gymnasium, there is an indoor weight room and dance studio. The school boasts a renovated courtyard, access to Lilly D. Wald playground, two Mac labs, a science lab, and partnerships with Basketball City and Abrons Art Center for arts and sports enrichment. (The high school has no connection to University Neighborhood Middle School, despite the similar names.)
College & Career: The college office works with students and families to identify each student's best post-secondary goals. Recent graduates have attended Cornell, Swarthmore, Colgate, Lehigh, Middlebury, Northeastern, Wesleyan, NYU, Baruch, George Washington and other colleges and universities.
