The Downside
Popular, more applicants than seats
The Northwell School of Health Sciences offers four programs: nursing, medical assisting, behavioral health, and healthcare management. Students spend part of their day in regular high school classes and part of it studying health care skills — in labs, in job shadow experiences, and later paid internships with Northwell Health and other partners. The school was popular from the start, with four applicants for every seat in 2025, its first year.
Students may also earn free early college credits, industry-recognized certificates, and join clubs, sports, and leadership activities.
The school was launched through a major partnership supported by nearly $25 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Northwell Health, and NYC Public Schools. The money helped build healthcare courses, training labs, and programs with real healthcare employers.
The school is one of four housed in the six-story Queens Innovation Center. Each school is designed to connect education with career pathways.
Opened in 2025, the new building has science labs, art and music rooms, computer labs, a library, gym, dance studios, an auditorium, and outdoor play and instructional areas. It also has therapy and speech rooms, occupational and physical therapy spaces, and medical and guidance suites. Sports are campus-wide. (Lydie Raschka, official reports, January 2026)
