What’s Special

Culinary program, extensive arts programs, beautiful building

The Downside

Low graduation rate

Long Island City High School (LIC) is a large school with an eclectic mix of programs, including a popular culinary arts institute and the Global Languages Academy, which helps English language learners capitalize on their multilingual skills by preparing for careers in the hotel and tourism industries.

The school admits students who are zoned for the school as well as students citywide who enroll in one of several themed programs: Global Informatics, Culinary Institute, Academy of Restaurant and Hotel Management, Sports Medicine and Health Sciences, Community and Culture, Broadway Productions, Global Languages Academy and Dual Language Spanish Program.

Each program functions as a small learning community where students take many of their classes together and get more personalized support from school staff including guidance counselors and social workers.

To boost their literacy skills, all 9th-graders take a class about argumentative writing and non-fiction readings. In the upper grade, students may choose from a range of Advanced Placement courses in biology, chemistry, English language and composition, environmental science, physics, psychology, Spanish, statistics, studio art, U.S. government and politics, and U.S. history.

LIC is part of the city's Renewal and Community Schools programs, which provides extra funding, support and oversight to low-performing schools. Extra resources allow the school to maintain partnerships with different organizations such as Zone 126, a local nonprofit that helps children and families living in Astoria and Long Island City work toward academic success. The community-based organization has helped the school provide a Healthfulness Center for students and their families, yoga and mindfulness classes, SAT prep classes, pre-college mentoring programs, and financial literacy programs for girls.

Still, LIC has room for improvement. According to its Quality Review, teacher effectiveness could be more developed. Also, its graduation rate falls below the citywide average.

The school is housed in a well-kept building that has an Olympic-size pool, two gyms, a weight room and a dance studio.

After school, students can participate in a variety of clubs and sports, such as fall and spring musicals, digital media programming, and a range of PSAL sports teams that includes coed cricket.
