The Downside

Many students miss a month or more of school

Mathematics, Science Research and Technology Magnet High School (MAST) is a small school housed in the Campus Magnet Building in Cambria Heights. Each student receives a laptop for use all through high school.

Academics & Instruction: Students are expected to take four years of math and science and at least one Advanced Placement course during their time at MAST. In addition to electives such as robotics, astronomy, and broadcast journalism, students may a take college level courses such as intro to sociology, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, bio-engineering and personal finance.

Teens may earn high school and college credit in classes taught by MAST teachers and certified by colleges and universities including Howard University, Princeton, Stanford, Arizona State, Georgetown University, Monroe, Touro, and University of Pennsylvania. They may also take courses at York College.

The school offers a summer enrichment program, academic support before and after school, and prep for Regents exams on Saturday.

Culture & Environment:  Students say they feel safe in school, based on their responses to the annual school survey.  They select their advisors and can remain with that adult all four years.

The entire school community gathers at the beginning of the week to check in and to hear feedback on any concerns. On Friday, teens gather in small advisory groups where they can explore peer pressure, self-esteem, relationships, school/home life and future goals.

Students are invited to start and join clubs and organizations that reflect their experience, such as the Latinos Unidos Club, the East Asian Club, and the Gay Straight Alliance Club.

Other weekly clubs and activities are based on interest such as music production and videography, dance, visual art, badminton, basketball and theater.

Students also get leadership training in social and emotional learning (SEL). Many students miss at least a month of school due in some cases to home responsibilities, travel distance or trauma related to the pandemic. The staff celebrates good attendance, interviews teens to learn root causes and reaches out to individuals to find flexible solutions (credit recovery, afternoon tutoring) to help them stay on track for graduation, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan.

Special Education & English as a New Language (ENL): The school has team-taught classes that serve a mix of general education students and those with special needs in one classroom. There are several ENL classes for beginners and more advanced speakers. The school offers after-school tutoring and a five-week summer program to help students practice speaking English in small groups. ENL students receive iPads for translation purposes in addition to their laptop.

Building & Facilities: Campus Magnet in Cambria Heights (formerly Andrew Jackson) serves more than 2,500 students and is divided into four schools. The building, constructed in 1937, boasts a stately entrance surrounded by manicured lawns and wrought iron fencing. MAST is located on the 1st and 2nd floors. The schools share the auditorium, gym, cafeteria, library, a large indoor track, weight room and sports fields. Students can take swimming lessons and be lifeguard certified in the building’s pool.

College & Career: MAST has two full-time guidance counselors, a part-time college counselor, and a teacher advisor, who meet one-on-one with students to help them devise a plan, such as college, military or workforce. Students participate in college trips and college and career fairs. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and interview, August 2023)
