Our Insights

What’s Special

Kids wire electrical circuits, repair computers and prepare food

The Downside

Lots of students miss more than one month of school

At George Westinghouse High School in downtown Brooklyn, students may learn to wire electrical circuits, repair computers or prepare food along with regular academic classes. Successful graduates may get jobs as union electricians, computer technicians or food service workers. Some go on to college.

Founded in 1919, Westinghouse is one of the oldest career and technical education (CTE) schools in the city. It shares a building with City Polytechnic High School of Engineering, Architecture and Technology and the middle school grades of PS 8, a popular Brooklyn Heights elementary school.

Students may apply to four programs: culinary arts, multimedia internet technology, electrical installation and practice, and computer repair. They may receive industry certifications and CTE diplomas.

Longtime assistant principal Joe Arzuaga was named principal in 2017. Enrollment is increasing after a period of decline, and more students say they feel safe in the hallways than they did a few years ago, according to school surveys. However, some teachers complain about discipline, and a large proportion of students miss more than one month of school, according to city data.

COLLEGE: A popular college counselor helps students choose appropriate schools. About 35 percent of graduates go on to college, and most of those go to either CUNYs or SUNYs. The majority need to take remedial courses, according to Department of Education statistics.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school has a resource room, self-contained classes and ICT team-teaching classes. (Clara Hemphill, May 2015; updated April 2018)
