George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School
Grades: 9-12Our Insights
What’s Special
Kids wire electrical circuits, repair computers and prepare food
The Downside
Lots of students miss more than one month of school
At George Westinghouse High School in downtown Brooklyn, students may learn to wire electrical circuits, repair computers or prepare food along with regular academic classes. Successful graduates may get jobs as union electricians, computer technicians or food service workers. Some go on to college.
Founded in 1919, Westinghouse is one of the oldest career and technical education (CTE) schools in the city. It shares a building with City Polytechnic High School of Engineering, Architecture and Technology and the middle school grades of PS 8, a popular Brooklyn Heights elementary school.
Students may apply to four programs: culinary arts, multimedia internet technology, electrical installation and practice, and computer repair. They may receive industry certifications and CTE diplomas.
Longtime assistant principal Joe Arzuaga was named principal in 2017. Enrollment is increasing after a period of decline, and more students say they feel safe in the hallways than they did a few years ago, according to school surveys. However, some teachers complain about discipline, and a large proportion of students miss more than one month of school, according to city data.
COLLEGE: A popular college counselor helps students choose appropriate schools. About 35 percent of graduates go on to college, and most of those go to either CUNYs or SUNYs. The majority need to take remedial courses, according to Department of Education statistics.
SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school has a resource room, self-contained classes and ICT team-teaching classes. (Clara Hemphill, May 2015; updated April 2018)

Computer Science (K70C)
Program Description:
Our comprehensive four-year Computer Science program transforms students from curious beginners into industry-ready developers through hands-on learning that mirrors real-world professional experiences. Starting in 9th grade with exciting projects like interactive games and AI exploration, students progressively master the essential technologies that power today's digital world from building their first websites with HTML and CSS to creating sophisticated web applications using React and JavaScript. Each year builds upon the last, culminating in advanced skills like data science and business development, while industry-recognized certifications from w3schools and Certiport validate their expertise to colleges and employers. By graduation, students will have a portfolio of projects that directly prepare them for high-demand careers as Full-Stack Developers, Front-End Developers, and UI/UX Designers, giving them a significant advantage whether they choose to enter the workforce immediately or pursue computer science at the university level.
Culinary Arts (K70D)
Program Description:
The Culinary Arts program combines the science behind food preparation and lab-like hands-on learning to prepare students for careers in the food service industry or further study. Students start with kitchen safety, sanitation, equipment use, and basic cooking techniques, then advance to more complex culinary and baking skills, including preparation for the NYC Department of Health Food Protection Certification. Highlights include visiting Essex Street Market for guest chef demonstrations, participating in a cake decorating class where they bake, design, and cost out a cake for a fictitious client, and completing a senior Cafe Project that involves planning and running a caf for school staff. Students also take the NOCTI Prep Cook Certification Exam, and benefit from career and scholarship opportunities through our partnership with Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP).
Electrical Installation Technology (K70E)
Program Description:
Our Electrical Installation and Practice program gives students hands-on training and real-world skills to succeed in today's high-demand electrical trades. Using nationally recognized NCCER Core and Electrical Level 1 curriculum, students learn safety, tools, blueprints, and electrical theory while earning valuable industry-recognized certifications, including OSHA 30 and NCCER. From residential to commercial wiring, conduit bending, and green energy, by graduation, students are prepared to enter college or a career. Partnerships with Solar 1, the Building Trades Council of NYC, and the MTA provide students the opportunity to learn the most up-to-date skills needed in the industry today.
IT Support and Cybersecurity (K70I)
Program Description:
In the IT Support pathway, students will develop the skills needed to become a marketable professional that top companies that use Information Technology services will want to hire. Through hands-on experiences, students will focus to earn their CCST(Cisco Certified Support Technician) by learning how to use technical resources in real-world scenarios. Students begin their study by focusing on their IT fundamentals (a full understanding of hardware and software). In Network Essentials students will build, troubleshoot, and secure networks. In Cybersecurity they will learn all that is needed to secure networks including monitoring and protecting sensitive data. Work based learning opportunities are available at all grade levels and include guest speakers, job shadowing, mock interviews and more.
