What’s Special

Health clinic, after school tutoring

The Downside

Not everyone graduates; attendance is poor

Mott Haven Village Preparatory is a small high school that has a partnership with East Side House Settlement, which provides afterschool and lunchtime programs and funds a career counselor to help students find paid internships in 11th and 12th grades.

The school faces challenges. Many students enter with weak academic skills, attendance is poor, and the graduation rate is far below the citywide average. Mott Haven offers small group instruction three days a week after school and schedules double-long periods of math and reading to help students catch up on skills.

In order to combat chronic lateness, the school rotates which classes take place in the morning so students don’t fall hopelessly behind in one subject, according to the comprehensive educational plan.

Montefiore Medical Center has a clinic in the building that provides free health services to students. A LYFE provides free daycare for students who are also parents. Most students say they feel safe in school.

Mott Haven Village Prep occupies part of the fourth and fifth floors of the South Bronx Educational Campus, a former elementary school with narrow hallways but some large classrooms, shared with University Heights High School. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, December 2018)
