What’s Special

Kids run their own mock businesses

The Downside

Poor academic performance

The High School of Arts and Technology, a small school in the Martin Luther King Educational Campus, give students the chance to create and run their own make-believe businesses in a “virtual enterprise” class. They may study web design, coding and visual arts.

Mariela Graham, the founding principal of the Urban Assembly School for Criminal Justice, a successful all-girls’, grades 6-12 school in Brooklyn, became principal of the High School of Arts and Technology in 2017.

Most students enter 9th grade with poor academic skills. Attendance is poor. While three-quarters graduate on time, few are well-prepared for college. [photo by Lydie Raschka](Clara Hemphill, web reports, November 2018)
