Fast Facts: NYC Public Kindergarten
Kindergarten Applications!
Let’s go over the basics:
Who: NYC children born in 2020 are guaranteed a spot for Fall 2025
When: December 10, 2024 through January 24, 2025
How it works: Apply to as many kindergarten programs as you like, but aim for at least 12 choices, including G&T and Dual Language programs. Offers depend on the order of your choices, seat availability, admissions priorities, and your random number.
Who gets in first? (always check priorities for each school/program on MySchools)
- If you live nearby (for your zoned school)
- If your sibling goes there
- If you're in Pre-K at the same school
- If you live in the school district
Note: The city is divided into 32 school districts. Districts 1, 7 and 23 have no zoned schools, which means residents of those three districts get priority for most or all in-district elementary schools.
List your preferred programs in your true order of preference.
Gifted and Talented (G&T): If you include G&T programs, eligibility is checked after applying. In NYC public pre-K, teachers decide; in private pre-K or no pre-K, the Department of Education (DOE) arranges interviews. They consider curiosity, learning approach, and self-direction.
Read more about G&T here and here.
Qualifying for G&T doesn't guarantee a spot, and competition is high. To improve your chances, mix G&T and regular kindergarten choices in your top preferences.
