District 32
Serving Bushwick and the northern tip of Bedford-Stuyvesant, District 32 is known for its historic brownstones, tree‑lined streets, and active cultural life, including Herbert Von King Park’s music and community events. Longtime residents include artists, musicians, and families deeply rooted in the neighborhood.
Bushwick itself is in the heart of Brooklyn’s street‑art scene, home to the famous Bushwick Collective murals. The area has undergone gentrification—with rising rents and displacement near Williamsburg—but retains its vibrant local culture.
Despite its small size, District 32 offers many Spanish dual-language programs. Most schools in the area serve a high-need population, with high poverty rates and academic performance levels that generally fall below city averages. Longtime residents have shown resilience, staying involved in improving schools, fighting for housing, and creating programs for local kids.
M.S. 383 Philippa Schuyler, about a mile east of Woodhull Medical Center, is regarded as one of the district’s more competitive and arts‑focused middle schools. The district has several charter schools.
