District 3

District 3, which covers the West Side of Manhattan from 59th Street to 122nd Street, has schools that vary significantly in quality. The district has some of the best schools in the city as well as some that are not ready for prime time.

Luckily, the district has a terrific family leadership coordinator, Dorothy Sheppard, who knows the schools well and helps parents navigate the complex system of school choice. She can be reached at (212) 678-5857 or djshepp@schools.nyc.gov.

Nearly all the elementary and middle schools in the district have open houses and tours, and the district has annual fairs at which parents may meet school representatives. The District 3 website has useful information with dates and times.
