District 28
District 28, covering a broad area of central Queens, is home to many Caribbean, South Asian, and Latinx communities. Most students attend their zoned elementary and middle schools.
PS 303 The Academy for Excellence through the Arts is a districtwide elementary school.. Catherine & Count Basie Middle School (6-8) offers dance and music including band, guitar, and drumline.
The district has several schools serving grades 6 to 12. Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School offers a progressive education with hands-on projects and outdoor trips. It focuses on teamwork and character while preparing students for college. The Young Women’s Leadership School is a single-gender public school focused on preparing girls for college.
Overcrowding is a challenge. Some schools are short on space for subjects like art, music, and special education services. Parents should plan ahead, and ask schools about facilities and programming, and explore local options.
Music, food, and festivals span the district neighborhoods. The Queensboro Dance Festival brings global traditions—Bolivian folk, Indian Kathak, West African dance—to neighborhood parks and plazas.
