District 2
District 2 has many high performing schools. It covers a broad swath of Manhattan that includes wealthy neighborhoods like the Upper East Side, Chelsea, and Tribeca, but it is also home to many low- and moderate-income families. Over half of District 2 students come from low income households.
About 15 elementary and middle schools in District 2 participate in the Diversity in Admissions (DIA) program. This aims to increase diversity within schools by giving first choice to applicants from various backgrounds, such as those learning English or from low-income homes.
A sampling of schools here includes P.S. 2 Meyer London (Pre-K-5) in Chinatown, which has long supported immigrant families and English Language Learners. P.S. 290 Manhattan New School (Pre-K–5), a pioneer in writing instruction, helps students find their voices through daily writing and detailed feedback.
Facing History (6-12) emphasized the learning of history to inform real-life choices. It is part of the New York Performance Standards Consortium, a group of schools where students complete rigorous, in-depth research projects
