District 19
District 19 is a largely residential area made up of single- and two-family homes, small apartment buildings, and a few large rental complexes. The district is home to a diverse, working-class community. Public schools work to provide strong support, creative programs, and opportunities for student growth—despite economic challenges for many residents. Schools reflect the neighborhood’s growing immigrant population through dual-language classes and arts and enrichment programs, like Filipino cooking, traditional dances, and Rangoli art patterns from India.
PS 89 Cypress Hills Community School (3K-8) is a non-zoned, Spanish/English dual language school, with strong parental involvement. PS 346 (K-8) is a zoned neighborhood school sharing a building with Frederick Douglass Academy VIII, known for its inquiry-based media arts and STEM (including drone tech and aeroponics).
There are just a few charter schools in the area.
