District 18
Once home to large populations of Italian and Jewish families, Canarsie is now a vibrant, predominantly Caribbean-American community. Local cultural landmarks like Kings Theatre, the Celebrate Canarsie Festival, and the Flatbush African Burial Ground connect schools and families to the area’s rich heritage.
PS 233 Langston Hughes (Pre-K-5), where all teachers hold Master’s degrees, has served generations of East Flatbush families. The arts program starts in 3-K and features music, dance, and media arts, with a focus on the Harlem Renaissance.
PS 235 Janice K. Knight (Pre-K-8) is a large school with solid academics that also houses Lenox Academy, a selective middle school program known for rigorous instruction.
PS 244 Richard R. Green (Pre-K-5) is known particularly for its special education services. The NEST program serves students on the autism spectrum who benefit from a structured, inclusive setting. The Science and Medicine Middle School (6-8) is open districtwide and seeks students who are interested in science and medicine.
