District 14
Williamsburg and Greenpoint have shifted over the years—from industrial hubs to creative enclaves, and now into family-friendly neighborhoods. The creative element is still there, but rising rents have brought a more upscale feel. You'll find a mix of longtime residents and newer, higher-income families, plus more parks and parent groups.
Schools have improved, though quality can vary. P.S. 110 The Monitor (Pre-K-5) offers an environmental curriculum tied to the Greenpoint oil-spill restoration and Eco‑Schools program. Students do garden work in McGolrick Park, and study Latin dance, musical theater, and recorder.
For middle school, M.S. 50 stands out with its championship debate team, strong academic performance, and Spanish dual language. Students may participate in the concert band, Latin jazz ensemble, drumline, and visual arts. Almost twice its size, I.S. 318 offers a wide range of electives including chess, robotics, cooking, sports, art classes, and many after-school programs.
